SWORD is the Marines’ deniable black-ops unit, and its confirmed roster is six field operatives — X Drake, Koby, Helmeppo, Prince Grus, Kujaku and Hibari — working alongside Vice Admiral Garp, who leads the unit’s operations without ever being formally listed as one of its “resigned” members. The unit is first named on the page in chapter 1080 of the manga, during the raid on Hachinosu, and its whole reason for existing is legal cover: members officially resign from the Marines so the World Government can disavow anything they do. What follows is every known member, their rank, abilities, bounty numbers and where each one stands as of the most recent chapters.

What SWORD actually is

SWORD is not a separate navy, a pirate crew, or a spy agency like Cipher Pol. It is a Marine special-forces outfit whose members have handed in their resignations on paper, which lets Marine HQ and the World Government claim no responsibility for their missions. That single mechanic explains almost every odd thing about the unit: why a former rear admiral can sail under a pirate flag, why a Marine captain can be treated as a hostage by an Emperor, and why a vice admiral can invade an Emperor’s island without an official declaration of war.

Per the manga’s exposition in the Hachinosu raid chapters, the unit answers to Marine HQ in practice while remaining officially unattached — a structure that lets the Marines take aggressive action in the New World without triggering the political consequences of a formal deployment. It is distinct from the Cipher Pols, which report through the World Government’s intelligence chain rather than the Marine chain of command.

The roster in detail

X Drake — the double agent who was SWORD before SWORD had a name

Drake is the unit’s proof of concept. He sailed as captain of the Drake Pirates, earned a 222,000,000-berry bounty, joined the Worst Generation, and infiltrated Kaido’s Beasts Pirates as one of the Flying Six — all while holding a Marine rear admiral’s rank. His Ancient Zoan, the Ryu Ryu no Mi, Model: Allosaurus, gives him a heavy, damage-soaking allosaurus form and a hybrid form he uses for close-quarters brawling with a saber and a bladed axe. His Marine allegiance surfaced during the Wano arc around chapter 995, and the SWORD label was made explicit later in the Hachinosu exposition. He was last seen recovering from the Onigashima war.

Koby — the unit’s conscience and its best Observation Haki user

Koby is a Marine Captain and the most visible SWORD member, largely because he was Blackbeard’s hostage after the Amazon Lily incident, which is what dragged SWORD into the story in the first place. His skill set is unusual for a captain: he is an Observation Haki specialist who reads intent and emotion rather than a Devil Fruit user, and he backs it with Rokushiki footwork — Soru for burst movement, Geppo for aerial repositioning. Chapter 1088 is his showcase, where a single Haki-charged punch shatters Pizarro’s stone arm and frees the raid’s escape route. He has no bounty, and his stock inside the story keeps rising.

Helmeppo — the least flashy member and the most loyal

Helmeppo trained beside Koby under Garp and has grown from Morgan’s spoiled son into a competent officer with twin kukri blades. He has no Devil Fruit, no bounty and no headline moment, which is exactly why he matters: SWORD’s rank and file is made of officers like him, not of monsters. If you are tracking the unit’s growth, his arc from Shells Town to Hachinosu is the cleanest before-and-after in the series.

Prince Grus — the unit’s battlefield engineer

Grus is a Rear Admiral with a Paramecia that lets him mold and animate clay, which he uses to build enormous grasping hands and expendable golems mid-fight. In practical terms he is the unit’s siege equipment: he shapes terrain, blocks escape routes and grabs targets that a normal Marine could never hold. He debuted with the SWORD group in chapter 1080 and has no bounty.

Kujaku — Rear Admiral, Tsuru’s granddaughter, and the unit’s control specialist

Kujaku’s whip-based Paramecia lets her seize and command whatever her whips touch, turning enemy weapons, structures and even ships against their owners. She is also, per the series’ SBS Q&A material, the granddaughter of Vice Admiral Tsuru — which puts her in one of the oldest Marine-strategist bloodlines in the story. She has no bounty and debuted in chapter 1080.

Hibari — the sniper who covers everyone else

Hibari is a Commander-grade marksman who fights with a long rifle and specialized ammunition rather than a Devil Fruit, and she has no confirmed bounty. She is the reason the unit’s clay golems and whip work: someone has to keep enemy officers pinned while the flashier powers do their job. Debuted in chapter 1080 with the raid team.

Garp — the spearhead whose membership is deliberately ambiguous

Garp is a Vice Admiral who has refused promotion to Admiral more than once, and he is the man who trained Koby and Helmeppo. He has no Devil Fruit; his power is pure Haki, expressed through named techniques like Galaxy Impact (chapter 1080), which flattened a town, and Blue Hole (chapter 1081). The manga never states plainly that he resigned and joined SWORD — he functions as its operational leader while remaining an official Marine, which preserves the unit’s deniability. He was left behind on Hachinosu, and the Marines have publicly treated his fate as unresolved.

How SWORD’s chain of command breaks down

Counting only confirmed names, the unit’s rank spread looks like this:

  • 1 Vice Admiral — Garp, the de facto commander of the Hachinosu operation.
  • 3 Rear Admirals — Drake (in his former Marine rank), Prince Grus and Kujaku. This is the unit’s striking power.
  • 1 Captain — Koby, the field leader on the ground and the unit’s public face.
  • 1 Commander and 1 Lieutenant Commander — Hibari and Helmeppo, the support layer.
  • 0 Admirals, 0 Devil Fruit users in the top slot — Garp and Koby both fight without a fruit, which is unusual for a Marine unit this aggressive.

Five things people get wrong about SWORD

  • Smoker and Tashigi are not confirmed SWORD members. They are independent Marines who frequently operate outside orders, which is a different thing from a resignation-based black-ops unit.
  • Kuzan is not SWORD. He left the Marines and joined the Blackbeard Pirates as a Titanic Captain — a genuine defection, not cover.
  • SWORD is not Cipher Pol. CP0 through CP9 answer to the World Government’s intelligence apparatus; SWORD sits in the Marine chain and uses resignations as a firewall.
  • “Resigned” does not mean “quit.” Members retain Marine training, rank structure and equipment; the resignation is procedural, not ideological.
  • Koby is a Captain, not a Vice Admiral. His promotions have been fast but modest, and the raid on Hachinosu was a rescue mission, not a promotion ceremony.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who are all the SWORD members in One Piece?

The confirmed roster is six field members — X Drake, Koby, Helmeppo, Prince Grus, Kujaku and Hibari — plus Vice Admiral Garp, who leads the unit’s operations without being formally confirmed as a member. The group is first named in chapter 1080 during the raid on Hachinosu. No other character has been confirmed as SWORD in the manga.

Is Garp a SWORD member?

The manga has never stated it outright. Garp commands the Hachinosu raid, trained two confirmed members, and behaves exactly like the unit’s leader, but he is still introduced as an active Vice Admiral rather than a resigned operative. That ambiguity is likely deliberate, since his official status is what lets the Marines disown the operation.

Is X Drake a Marine or a pirate?

Both, in sequence. He held the Marine rank of Rear Admiral while sailing as captain of the Drake Pirates, and he infiltrated Kaido’s Beasts Pirates as one of the Flying Six. His 222,000,000-berry bounty was real, and his Marine allegiance was revealed during the Wano arc before the SWORD label was applied to him.

Which chapter does SWORD first appear in?

The unit is first named in chapter 1080, at the start of the Hachinosu raid. The earliest groundwork is much older — X Drake’s Marine ties go back to Wano around chapter 995, and Koby’s capture by Blackbeard’s crew is set up around chapter 1059. Read 1059, then 1080 through 1088, for the complete picture.

Are Smoker or Tashigi SWORD members?

No confirmation exists for either. Both are Marines who regularly act on their own judgment, which makes them easy to mistake for a black-ops unit, but the manga has never listed them as SWORD. Until a chapter says otherwise, treat them as independent Marine officers.

Is SWORD the same as Cipher Pol?

No. Cipher Pol is the World Government’s intelligence and assassination arm, reporting outside the Marine chain of command. SWORD is a Marine special-forces unit whose members formally resign so their missions can be denied. The two share a taste for secrecy but nothing else.
